A FORMER Yate mayor who led the restoration of Poole Court has released a book showcasing the impact of global warming.

Paul Marx, a town councillor and mayor from 1988-1990, is celebrating the publication of his novel The Phoenix Affair.

The book spans the UK and the US and centres around an expanding population and the horrifying results of global warming, the pressures of which lead to individuals attempting to provide solutions.

“Every natural disaster has a social and economic knock-on effect,” said Mr Marx, 68. “Just like the looters that ran wild in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina, I was keen to show how global warming could affect people at a grassroots level.

“While Governments are currently binding together to develop a solution, they could quickly grow apart and even become enemies if global warming does come to fruition.”

The plant and machinery consultant, who moved to Burnley in Lancashire in 1996, added: “This novel will captivate anyone with an interest in politics, crime or international affairs. It’s not a book you’ll forget soon.”

Mr Marx, a campaigning Liberal Democrat from 1982, helped oversee the restoration of Poole Court, now Yate Town Council’s offices, and as a keen model maker he made a scale model of the project before it started.

In 2002 he was featured in Discovery Television’s Plane Crazy series, featuring a fundraising display of over 1,000 model planes and his paintings of planes were commissioned by GKN Westlands’ commissioned artists for many years.

In 1982, Mr Marx became infamous after forming a group to complete a worker ‘buy out’ from the receivers of local company Hamlet Furniture that had gone into receivership.

It was one of the first companies that was rescued in the UK in this manner. 23 Mr Marx, who lives with his Inese, has worked in 32 different countries since 2001 including Russia, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Iraq and Nigeria.

The Phoenix Affair is available from Amazon now.
