AN open day has been planned by the Thornbury Area Music Trust, which is continuing to grow as children develop their music making skills.

The trust was set up in 2012 when council-run music provision for young players was under threat.

It later formed a junior music centre for under-sevens to complement the service for older children and recently has taken on a second tutor for the juniors.

Children from a wide area attend sessions, as well as those from Thornbury itself, some travelling from Chipping Sodbury, Almondsbury, Wotton-under-Edge and Little Stoke for lessons.

The open day will be held on Saturday, January 18, from 9.30am to noon, at the trust's base in Marlwood School, Alveston, with Thornbury and Yate MP Steve Webb expected to visit for part of the event.

Parents, children and music teachers are invited to attend and any child keen to be enrolled should take their instrument with them.

Future plans by the trust include both senior and junior orchestras and the South Cotswold Youth Orchestra playing at the regional music for youth festival in Cheltenham in March.

Members of the senior orchestra will also be going on tour to Paris in the summer, where they plan to perform in three concerts.
