FAMILIES filled High Street in Thornbury to see the annual Boxing Day meet of the Berkeley Hunt.

The town has been the traditional venue for the post-Christmas meet for many years and gave spectators the chance to get close to the hounds before they set off with the hunt staff and the mounted followers.

Some of the riders had even added some festive touches to their horses and their own hunting gear for the special day.

The Berkeley was one of three hunts to meet in the South Gloucestershire and Gloucestershire area on what is one of the most popular hunting days of the year.

Captain Ian Farquhar, joint master of the Duke of Beaufort’s hunt, said around 3,000 people attended its meet at Worcester Lodge, Didmarton.

The recently formed Severn Vale Beagles were also out, meeting at the Salutation pub in Ham, just up the road from the Berkeley Hunt kennels which they share with the foxhounds.
