Flu vaccinations are to be offered to all children who were aged two or three on the first of September 2013.

It is the first time that the vaccination has been offered to all children. Previously, it was only offered to children with a condition that puts them at risk from the effects of flu.

The flu vaccination is administered via a nasal spray and does not require an injection. It has been thoroughly tested to ensure that it is safe and has proved to be more effective in preventing flu in children than other flu vaccines.

Dr Mark Pietroni, Director of Public Health at South Gloucestershire Council said: “Most healthy people recover from flu within a week but it can still be a highly unpleasant and disruptive experience for those affected.

“For children, a bout of flu can lead to time off school with knock-on effects for parents who may need to take time off work to care for their child.

"Children who contract flu can also spread it among other children and teachers or nursery staff, so it is in everyone’s interest for parents to ensure that their youngsters receive the vaccination which is now being offered to all two and three-year-olds.”

Local GP practices in South Gloucestershire are currently contacting parents of children aged two or three years to arrange a vaccination appointment.

Parents are encouraged to contact their surgery if they do not receive an appointment.
