TWO members of Avon and Somerset police will stand trial this week charged with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

PC Alex Owen, aged 31 and from Portishead, and police staff Nina East, aged 34 and also from Portishead, will appear at Gloucestershire Crown Court today.

It is alleged that between July 2008 and January 2009, Ms East was driving a car caught in a speed check.

The pair were charged with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice after Mr Owen allegedly claimed to be driving to prevent Ms East losing her licence.

The Crown Prosecution Service allege he did so in order to avoid her being liable for three penalty points, which may have resulted in her disqualification due to existing penalty points on her licence.

The trial begins on Wednesday and is due to last three days.

Avon and Somerset Constabulary said it was unable to comment further at this stage.
