AMBITIOUS plans to install a modern lift, glass foyer and disabled toilet at Dursley Town Hall are to be supported by a fundraising campaign launching this weekend.

The renovations are being made to boost the rental income, which has been described as “essential” if the Grade II listed building is to be maintained.

At 10am on Saturday, March 22, Dursley Town Hall Lift Project will be formally launched by mayor Jane Ball, who will unveil a fundraising “thermometer” in the shape of a lift to represent the total amount donated so far.

Coffee and cakes in the shape of a lift will be available to passers-by as trustees of the hall seek funds for the scheme.

Project manager Steve Hart said the extensive project would cost around £150,000 in total as it also includes a glassed-in foyer and disabled WC on the ground floor in the market place.

“However, the lift will bring great benefits to the building and open up the use of the hall for many more people for years to come.”

Dursley Town Trust, a charity responsible for three historic buildings in Dursley, has permission from English Heritage and Stroud District Council to install the lift, which has been an aim of the group for a number of years.

“It is designed to give more Dursley and Cam people, especially those with impaired mobility, better access to an important first-floor meeting room.

The trust then intends to market the space to a wider community, including special interest groups, history societies, music clubs, school students and social gatherings.

An increase in much-needed rental income will fund the day-to-day maintenance and long-term preservation of the Dursley landmark, which was built in 1738.

The town hall and market place, known collectively as the Market House, have just been refurbished inside and out, with the fire bell repaired and reattached after vandals broke it.

Residents are being asked to show their support for the scheme and help raise funds to contribute to the project.

Chairman of the trustees, Mike Doughty, said they would like as much public support as possible.

“The town hall only has a future if it can used by all members of the community and this lift will make that happen.”

The trust is also applying to a wide range of people and organisations for funds to contribute to the installation.
