A TROOP of Dursley Primary Academy pupils have trekked from the school to the centre of town and back to highlight the distances some of the world’s poorest people have to walk for water as part of Sport Relief.

In all 18 pupils from the Church of England school undertook the wo-mile challenge carrying eight litres of water in one litre bottles, whilst accompanied by several teachers and Sainsbury’s staff.

The supermarket on Castle Street was their destination in town where they collected the water to carry back to school on Friday.

It formed part of a whole day of events at the school, which included pupils dressing in their house colours and donating 50p for the privilege.

Reception teacher Sarah Gaskin organised the fundraising event so the children could understand how hard it was for some children to drink safe, clean water.

“It went really really well,” she said.

“I think it helped the students understand the distances they would have to travel and the point seemed to come across to event younger ones.

“They were very tired by the time they got back to the school but they enjoyed the adventure.”

Ms Gaskin added that she would like to thanks Sainsbury’s for their help and for donating the eight litres of water for the challenge and to the other two organisers of the day, teachers Emma Brown and Jo Kilminster.
