THE Pilning Flower show had a record-breaking amount of entries in its 46th year.

The popular event beat its record, only set last year, after judges reported the high quality of the 462 entries on Saturday (August 29).

The show, which is organised by a team of volunteers with help from the community, showcased colourful displays of local talent during the afternoon at St Peter’s School.

Thornbury judge Ray Worsley, who organisers were pleased to see returning after being hospitalised last year, said: “The standard has certainly gone up over the years and the main hall of St Peter’s School is a wonderful facility for showing things at their best.”

Richard Edwards, chairman of the organising committee, said over £1,000 was raised for the show’s chosen charity this year - Pilning Pips Pre-School.

“We have around 200 people come along, and we’ve had some great feedback from the public,” he said.

“It was a tremendous show and we really are grateful for the enthusiasm of the competitors, the appreciation and generosity of everyone that attended and of course all our sponsors.”

Taking home the ‘Best in Show Shield’ was Graham Hawkins from Southmead, with his near perfect ‘top tray’ of vegetables.

Top in flowers was Mervyn Jacobs and ‘Best in Show by a Parishioner’ went to Veronica Hathway for her detailed knitted circus clown in the well supported adult crafts section.

As well as variety of exhibits, visitors enjoyed homemade cakes and teas, a bumper raffle and an auction of show produce and donated items.

Mr Edwards added: “Everyone was able to pick up bargains in the concluding charity auction of show produce and special items donated by local businesses, which was amusingly delivered by witty locals Dave Derham and Nick Harley.”

“The organising committee will meet in a couple of weeks to review this year’s show and then we will start planning the 47th show in December.”
