AN OLVESTON renowned pop-up artist's painting of the Queen is now on display in recognition of her becoming Britain’s longest reigning monarch.

Vicarage Lane resident and local celebrity Angus Macaskill erected the oil painting portrait on his gates yesterday.

It is in preparation of the Queen passing Queen Victoria’s record on Wednesday, September 9, who reigned for 23,226 days.

The painting, which took Mr Macaskill over five hours to paint, will be on display for two weeks for residents and passers-by to enjoy.

He said he was very happy with the result, even though it took him longer than expected to complete.

“I painted on the frame and it took a few minutes to install the painting on the gates,” he said.

“I’ve had a couple of people come by already and say well done – one pulled up in his car and pulled down the window to have a look, and said he liked it.

“I think it’s important to paint the Queen, and show people she is also a person even though she is in the public eye and photographed all the time.”

The artist, who has now transformed his gates with over 100 paintings over the years, already has plans for his next subject.

“I’m going to Weston-super-Mare later this week to Banksy’s Dismaland and I think my next piece may have something to do with that,” he said.

“Of course, it will be very different and far more furious than this painting of the Queen.”

The local celebrity has previously transformed his gates into a life-size tribute to the late Labour politician Tony Benn, a mural depicting memorable Jubilee and Olympics scenes and an eight-foot-tall depiction of Jesus on the cross to mark Easter earlier this year.
