SPEED CAMERAS are set to be introduced along the M32 motorway next month during roadworks to make way for the MetroBus network.

The permanent average speed cameras will limit traffic to 30mph until Spring next year when the work finishes, and will then revert to 40mph.

As well as the installation of the cameras, the works include the extension of the existing southbound bus lane being extended from junction thee to the railway bridge crossing the motorway.

The MetroBus system will begin operating in Autumn 2017.

As part of the efforts to minimise disruption, the M32 will remain open while the works take place, but despite a schedule having not yet been released, the MetroBus group have said some evenings will involve motorists being diverted off the motorway at junction three, around the roundabout and immediately back on.

There will also be two narrow lanes in both directions at the junction for the installation of the southbound bus lane.

After the works have finished there will be, from left to right, two southbound lanes for general traffic and a bus lane.

After work for the southbound bus lane has finished there will still be two lanes for general traffic in each direction.

We’ll be managing the road works to minimise disruption to the travelling public,” said Cllr Colin Hunt, lead member of South Gloucestershire Council's planning, transport and strategic environment team.

“Extending the M32 bus lane will speed up bus journeys for MetroBus passengers; it will also mean quicker journeys for passengers on other bus services that use the motorway. By improving the reliability of bus services we’ll encourage more people to leave their cars at home, reducing congestion for everyone.”
