FEARS for the future of green spaces across Thornbury and Alveston were allayed following confirmation that they would be protected from development.

As part of the South Gloucestershire Council Places, Sites and Policies Plan, which was launched earlier in the year, the wide ranging consultation sought to allocate spaces that would be safeguarded.

Concerns were raised after the first draft in June when a number of open spaces were removed from the list following objections from officers South Gloucestershire Council.

But in a decision made by councillors, the sites, and 20 others have been reinstated onto the list. A decision that has been welcomed by both the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats, who had previously spoken on the issue.

TRIBUTES were paid to a “trailblazer” former headmaster of a school in Thornbury, who passed away aged 94.

Clifford “Cliff” Martin took the helm at The Castle School when it was first founded in 1965, helping to establish its excellent reputation, and bringing it into the comprehensive era.

Family and friends came together to celebrate his life at a funeral held at Westerleigh Crematorium.
