A GROUP of mums are putting their pushchairs in poll position as they launch a new buggy walk.

The bi-monthly walks from Yate Library are aimed at giving new mums, grandparents and childminders a chance to keep fit and meet other like-minded parents and carers.

The first walk took place on Monday (July 7) and saw mums get together for a brisk walk through the town pushing their children in their pushchairs.

The buggy group is being supported by South Gloucestershire Council.

Christina Wheeler, Walking for Health project worker and maternal health co-ordinator, said: “Buggy walks are a great way for parents, grandparents, childminders or anyone pushing a buggy to meet on a regular basis to take part in simple and effective exercise.

“Brisk walking is the closest thing to perfect exercise. It’s a free, sociable, easy activity that’s accessible to most people.

“In just a short time, a small amount of regular exercise can significantly improve a person’s health, well-being and confidence. However, many walkers feel that the camaraderie and network of support that they experience through a group walking is equally, if not more, important to them than the physical health benefits.”

She added: “It is very common for new mothers to experience the ‘baby blues’ after their child is born. “For a small minority these feelings can continue and develop into post-natal depression. Attending regular buggy walks has been shown to improve mental wellbeing and help reduce the likelihood of postnatal depression.”

The walks will run on the first and third Monday of every month including over the summer holidays. They will be led by trained walk leaders and will last for approximately 45 minutes, followed by coffee.

Meet at Yate Library at 10am and wear comfortable shoes, sun tan lotion and bring a rain cover for your pushchair.
