THIS YEAR’S Thornbury Horticultural Society Summer Show was a resounding success with well over 400 entries from the town’s keen gardeners and most creative minds.

Despite several showers on the day people of all ages still turned out in force to show off their creations at the Armstrong Hall in the town centre.

Sandra Grey won in both the vegetable section and also for her preserves and took home the coveted awards for funniest vegetable, heaviest onion and longest runner bean.

Jenny Jones was awarded with the top prize in the cookery category; Mrs Jones also helped to lead Falfield WI to the most points and top prize for the Women’s Institutes competition.

Mrs Culverhouse headed the flowers and plants category with Mrs Mackinnon winning a prize for her floral art.

Cossham Hall hosted the show’s craftwork; photos and children’s sections with Harrison Parker once again won the top award in the 7-14-year-olds category with his impressive posy of flowers.

Whilst Lizzie Latham’s painted picture of her teacher won her the red rosette for her entry in the under 7s category.

The very talented Honey Camp won both the handicrafts and photographic sections with her selection of photos winning most of the categories in the section.

The Horticultural Society’s chairman Rex Davies paid tribute to committee members and all the helpers for making a very successful day for Thornbury.

Ruth Kitson, vice chairman of the Society said: “Some hefty showers meant it was a wet walk, but, there was a great array of summer flowers, making a very colourful show as was the case with the floral arrangements.”

The Thornbury Horticultural Society’s spring show will take place on Saturday, March 21 next year and next year’s summer show will be held on Saturday, August 1.
