ONE of the leading agricultural shows in Gloucestershire returns to Berkeley Castle next week with a wide range of competitions, stalls and games sure to get everybody excited.

Around 10,000 people are expected at the much anticipated Berkeley Show, which returns to the meadow at the castle on Bank Holiday Monday, August 26.

The popular event sees various livestock and produce competitions combined with entertainment for the whole family including music, dancing and even a dog show.

Horse enthusiasts will again not be disappointed this year, with a hunter display, showjumping, private driving turnouts, pony classes and gymkhana all set to take place.

Youngsters can take part in classic classes such as working hunter pony, in-hand showing and the most suitable child’s pony.

There will also be heavy horses and rare breeds on show including dog, horse, cattle, sheep, hen and pig showing classes.

Children are not to be left out either with a range of fun fair rides, a bouncy castle, a flight simulator, rodeo bull and archery ensuring they are kept entertained.

The trade stands, craft marquee, foodhall and farmer’s market areas will be packed with a huge variety of goods on offer, ranging from handbags to tractors, bulbs to generators.

In addition a wide range of vintage machinery will also be on display.

A highlight of the day for many will be seeing the professional handlers of the Rockwood Dog Display Team put through their paces on a number of challenging courses.

Berkeley Show secretary Christine Carter said that an army of volunteers from the Berkeley Agricultural Society was making sure everything was in place for the big day.

“We have a lovely site with the backdrop of the Berkeley Castle. There’s something for everybody,” she said.

“Add to this mix food and drink and good company and the 112th show will be one to remember.”

Admission costs £10 for adults, £5 for children and senior citizens and a family ticket of two adults and two children is £20.

Car parking is free across the road or 310 to park at the showground before 11am.

The one day event starts off at 9.30am and is likely to be open until around 7.30pm.
