INQUISITIVE Crossways Schools pupils have been learning about the First World War and have been commemorating 100 years since the outbreak of the war.

They have had assemblies from the army, air force and also from a local historian who taught them about the war.

The children were also given the opportunity to sit in an army jeep as well as make their own clay and felt poppies.

They have also decorated a heart each, with words such as Brave, Peace and Remember which became the petals of a giant poppy which is displayed at the school.

Donations collected by the school throughout this week’s events will go towards paying for one of the ceramic poppies which are being added to the Tower of London art installation with the remainder going to services charities.

Executive head teacher Mark Toogood said: “The children were really enthusiastic to learn about World War One, what happened and how we can try make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
