THE Police and Crime Commissioner for Gloucestershire was delighted to see the success of a community centre in Cam – a project he helped fund as part of a county-wide initiative.

Gloucestershire’s PCC Martin Surl dropped into GL11 Community Hub for a spot of lunch cooked up by their kitchen team – largely comprised of volunteers.

It was announced earlier this year that Mr Surl, for the second year running, would be providing £10,000 of funding to the hub as part of his Older but not Overlooked scheme.

Older but not Overlooked aims to give the most vulnerable members of society confidence through the promotion of social activity.

GL11 Community Hub, with its wide range of courses and friendly environment, is, from the perspective of the PCC, an ideal candidate for the fund.

Mr Surl is thrilled with how the project has grown and happy to have made a contribution to such a worthwhile cause.

He said: “I am delighted to see how it has grown and pleased to have contributed to its development.

“GL11 is now a thriving operation which supports people in Cam, Dursley and the surrounding villages and is a vibrant addition to the life of many the local communities.

“It is a great place for people to get out and meet others either on a one-to-one basis or in groups and also provides training, educational courses and opportunities for volunteering.

“It does a great job in bringing people together and helping to tackle the sense of isolation and vulnerability that many people feel, especially those who are older and live alone in rural communities”.

The funding received my Martin Surl goes predominantly into the hub's cafe, which has only one paid member of staff.

The money also goes towards the full-time employment of the hub's community development worker Anna Ryan.
