PUPILS will welcome pigeons as special visitors to their school in Olveston next week.

The Royal Pigeon Racing Association (RPRA) will spend a day at Olveston Primary School on October 6 to give pupils an understanding of the role pigeons played in the second world war.

The visit, from general manager of the association Stewart Wardrop and four pigeons, coincides with Yr 5 and 6 pupils’ topic of war and peace.

Maria Vizard, curriculum leader and Yr 5 teacher, said that staff at the school are always endeavouring to make learning an interactive and fun experience.

“We hope that all of the children will enjoy the visit from Stewart and his pigeons,” she said.

“It is an element of the second world war that can often be overlooked and not covered in teaching.

“A huge thank you to Mrs Annette Bishop, one of our valued non-teaching staff, who gave me the information about the RPRA. It was an inspired idea and one that the pupils will not forget.”

Pupils will be given a presentation ‘Pigeons in History’ and be given the opportunity to see props ranging from a pigeon parachute to world war two ratio books for pigeons.

The visit will culminate with releasing the pigeons on the school field, weather permitting.
