Girl snatched by two men

THORNBURY schoolchildren were given a "don't walk home alone" warning this week after a 13-year-old girl was abducted and taken on an hour-long terror drive.

The teenager was walking from Castle School at around 4pm on Tuesday and had reached the junction of Avon Way with Windrush Court when two men drew up beside her in white, old-style Ford Fiesta and she was bundled in the back.

The car then set off towards Streamleaze and the struggling victim, who was restrained by one of the men who also had his hand over her eyes, was driven around the area.

The terrified girl was finally released at around 5pm at the top of Thornbury Hill near the Alveston's Ship Inn and immediately called police on her mobile phone.

"This is an alarming incident and although apparently unharmed the victim was severely traumatised," said Thornbury police sector deputy Sgt Simon Ellis. "She has been video-interviewed and action is being taken to find these men.

"We need the public's help and anyone with information should call the inquiry team on 0117 945 4213 as matter of urgency. If they prefer than can pass information in confidence via Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

"Meanwhile we are advising parents to escort children to and from school or, if that is not practical, to ensure they walk with friends, and to remind them of the dangers of talking to strangers."

He said such incidents were extremely rare but precautions were advisable. Castle School has also issued similar advice to pupils, warning them to take greater care, especially during the current dark and foggy conditions, and always to walk with friends or in groups.
