Street party goes with a real swing

A NEW tradition looks set to become a firm favourite in Wotton-under-Edge's calendar - the Christmas street party in Fountain Crescent.

Around 1,500 people flocked to the street, to enjoy the event in good, dry weather.

The party started at 6pm, and people were still enjoying themselves two hours later.

Stocks of hot dogs, toffee apples and hot chestnuts sold out, while mulled wine was served on a grand scale.

One of the organisers, Karen Underwood, said: "Our thanks go to Wotton Round Table who worked really hard, and it was great the Lions club could be there as well."

The tombola, run by Fountain Crescent residents, was very popular and many raffle tickets were sold, with prizes provided by Wotton traders.

Mrs Underwood added: "We're really grateful to the local businesses, including Rio Pools from Kingswood, and also to Mike Shellard, who provided music."

Wotton firefighters brought Father Christmas to the party, on a decorated float.

Town Mayor Cllr Chris Galbraith and other councillors also attended, and unanimously chose their favourite of the illuminated houses - 11 Fountain Crescent.

Proud resident Dawn Slade received a £50 voucher from internet company ChristmasTime.

Mrs Underwood said: "There was a wonderful atmosphere, and everyone had a good time. We'll be continuing to switch the lights on and collecting for Cotswold Care Hospice and the Gloucestershire Ambulance Responders, and Graham will be opening Santa's grotto at No 4 until Christmas Eve."

Already residents are already making plans for an even more spectacular show next year.
