Give us back our village

SIR - For the first time in my life I am moved to write to a newspaper.

I am appalled that you should have highlighted the letter from Peter Drew of Rockhampton in last week's Gazette (December 19).

I am one of many who have campaigned for over 40 years for something to be done about the B4509. Children have been killed on this road. Much loved pets are frequently slaughtered. Accidents happen on a regular basis.

This is a main link road to the M5. Drivers, including presumably Mr Drew, behave as though they were still on the motorway.

We have no pavements, no lane lines, no bumps; nothing to protect us from the deadly traffic.

Then as soon as something is at last proposed to help ups, an individual in a neighbouring quiet village has the effrontery to question it and quote Government circulars.

We have a community once. We have lost it to the B4509!

Give us back our village!
