Car thieves try to run owner over

THIEVES attempted to run a man over as he tried to prevent them from stealing his car in broad daylight.

The incident happened at The Ham, near Coaley, around 1.20pm on Sunday.

The householder was raking leaves in his back garden when he heard the alarm on his Subaru Legacy Estate go off.

When he went round to the front of his house to investigate he found two white males in the car.

As they attempted to drive off the man tried to stop them but was forced to allow them to escape after they had driven the vehicle at him.

They fled in the dark green vehicle at high speed in the direction of Cam.

The householder also reported seeing a small, light-coloured vehicle that was driven away at the same time. A neighbour also saw the vehicle and described it as a white Peugeot 206 van with an orange or brown nearside door.

One of thieves is described as 5ft 9in tall, podgy, with dark hair and wearing a dark jacket and a dark beanie hat.

The other is described as looking about 20, with light hair and was also wearing a dark beanie hat.

Shortly afterwards the Subaru - a model only available from Japan - was seen at the Co-op in Cam before being driven off in the direction of the A38 again at high speed.

The first man may have been spotted a day later in Coaley driving a T-registration Mercedes.

Anyone with any information about the incident or about the vehicles should ring Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 or the police on 0845 0901234.
