February made us shiver

AFTER a mild start to February, with the temperature reaching 14 degrees C (58F) on the 4th and on seven other occasions topping 10 C (50 F) there was a dramatic change to much colder conditions on the 15th.

The rest of the month was cold with bitter winds from either the north or the east culminating in a snowfall to a depth of half an inch on the afternoon of the 26th. A further fall of snow during that night increased the depth to one and a quarter inches.

During the last three days of the month the day temperature did not rise above 3 C (38F). There were 11 night frosts with the temperature dropping to -7 C (20F) on the night of 26th-27th, making that the coldest night since January 1, 2002.

Rainfall for February amounted to 2.35in.
