Residents 'living on a race track'

SPEEDING traffic is putting residents and pedestrians at risk on a stretch of road in Wotton-under-Edge.

Residents of Coombe Terrace have written to Wotton Town Council to complain about the traffic, which they claim is turning the road outside their house into what they have described as the M4058.

"We live on a race track," sad the letter. "There is no path and you have to step out of your house into the path of oncoming traffic - which is invariably exceeding the speed limit. Any pedestrian is at risk on the road."

Cllr Dr John Cordwell said there are plans to introduced traffic calming measures on the B4048 at Rushmire Hill.

"This work is due to be done this year," he said. "However there are also plans to resurface the road and this will need to be done ahead of any calming work."

Cllr Geoff Keen said police intervention might help reduce the problem. "There are frequent speed checks on the road past Katharine Lady Berkeley's School in the middle of the morning," he said. 'I think the time could be more usefully spent in Coombe Terrace,"

Councillors also noted traffic travelling out of the town on Bradley Road is frequently seen exceeding the speed limit.

Members resolved to write to the police and inform the residents of imminent traffic-calming work.
