THE COUNCILLOR in charge of bringing the Tesco development to Dursley has refused to put an exact date on when the project might be ready by.
Cllr Nigel Studdert-Kennedy (Con, The Stanleys), Stroud District Council cabinet member for economic development and regeneration, said the stage had not been reached whereby he could give any definite predictions.
He said: "Although the number of hurdles has been reduced, there is still a lot of hard work to do. However, nobody is keener than I am to get it done."
The multiple land-owners around the proposed town centre site and the fact that the development requires the demolition of the existing fire station and the building of a new one are holding the project up.
Only when those problems have been dealt with and Tesco signs the agreement to go ahead can a planning application be submitted.
Added Cllr Studdert-Kennedy: "It is anticipated that a planning application will go in by the end of this year so the supermarket could be built by the summer of 2005 but it entirely depends on how soon the agreement is tied up."
