GM lift is 'a failure'

SIR - The European Commission's decision to lift the six-year moratorium on authorising new GM foods for human consumption is a failure of democracy and nothing short of a disaster for those of us trying to persuade disaffected voters that the EU listens to their voice.

Serious questions remain over the safety of GM food - and Bt-11 maize in particular. But even if that wasn't the case, consumers have clearly stated their opposition to authorising new GM foods.

The other month the Agriculture Ministers of the EU's democratically elected governments failed to reach agreement on authorising the GM sweetcorn - for this very reason. That the EU's least accountable institution has been able to make this deeply unpopular decision doesn't only threaten the future of organic and non-GM farmers, and human health, it sends a clear message to voters that Brussels isn't listening.
