Gazette Comment

"UNLESS I'm very much mistaken ... I am very much mistaken!"

Those of us who grew up as motorsport fans, thanks as much to the underpants-on-fire commentary of Murray Walker as to the action itself, can only hope the great man is enjoying his retirement.

If he is not, then he could do worse than to move to Dursley, Cam, Kingswood or anywhere else in the district.

From the comfort of his armchair he could look out of the window and commentate on speeding drivers to his heart's content.

What is it about drivers that makes them need to act like they are taking on Michael Schumacher at Silverstone when some are merely dropping the kids off at school?

Why do pedestrians need eyes in the back of their heads just to cater for the fact that some teenager thinks that he is Jenson Button?

And is everybody so under pressure that they can not settle for getting to work just a couple of minutes later or even leaving home earlier?

Country roads and housing estates are not the place to have a go at achieving the land speed record.

Not only are speeding drivers putting themselves in danger, they are endangering the lives of other road users and pedestrians as well.

All these people have families, friends and colleagues and to lose someone over something as easily preventable as speeding is such a waste.
