A Rosebud by any other name

GAZETTE readers' favourite Rosebud is four-and-a-half year old Isabella Friend.

Isabella, who lives in Tiltsdown Close, Cam, is the winner of the competition run by the Gazette in conjunction with Dursley Town Festival Committee.

She will now take part in the town festival carnival procession on Saturday, July 10 and receive a Gazette trophy and a £50 prize.

Runners up in the Rosebud competition are Lucy Smith, 9, of Springfield, Cam, and Jae Johnson, 7, of Weavers Close, Dursley. They each receive a Gazette trophy and £25 and will be joining Isabella in the carnival procession.

It is hoped that all the Rosebud entrants will also take part in the procession.

Fifty years ago the Dursley Rosebuds were an important part of Dursley's carnival and gala day and the Gazette has heard from a number of original Rosebuds and attendants from the 1950s and 1960s.

Several of them - including Chris Foat (nee Lees), Mary Lennard (nee Hewish), Judith Price (nee Witts), Joy Price, Liz Palmer, Marian Whitlock and Joy Jellings (nee Moon) - sent in old pictures and their memories of those days.
