Speed not sole hazard

SIR - Why do the residents of Kingswood assume the accident last week was caused by a speeding motorist?

I'm not doubting that speeding is an issue but it is just one of many that can contribute to road accidents. One such issue is not paying attention to the road ahead.

May I suggest that the driver was actually trying to read one of the roadside signs advertising a summer fete or the like, rather than watching the road? These signs appear in all the local villages at this time of year - even those where residents have concerns about a perceived speeding problem.

I'd feel safer if the locals spent some time removing these hazards, rather than requesting valuable police resources or operating speed traps themselves.
