FOR Gloucestershire County Council it may be a road to nowhere. But for the residents of Brookend it is the road they use everyday - and they want something done about the state of it.

They say they have to put up with an uneven surface and pavements that are overgrown and have badly deteriorated. With this description, it sounds more like a mediaeval track than a modern route.

To get work done they have taken matters into their own hands by starting a petition. Is this what people have to do to get things done? Even though it is an unclassified road surely repairs should be made as a matter of course.

The council has said that it will assess the site for future works. But how far into the future is it talking about? One year, five years, or will it be another 28 years before the repairs are made? Or will it take somebody to fall over and seriously injure themselves before action is taken?

The council needs to act and make the lives of the people who live there a little bit easier. If the Romans could build a whole network of roads, why is it so hard to repair a small stretch?
