Increase in costs for auctions

SIR - It is ironic that within a matter of days of our application to the Stroud District Council for three additional auction days per year being rejected that we should receive notice from the same body that the rateable value of the Auction Rooms will be increased.

On one hand our freedom to trade is restricted, whilst on the other the same body increases our costs on what in effect are two high maintenance grade two 19th century former ecclesiastical buildings which would be of very limited use to virtually any other business.

It would seem that those that can, do, and those that can't, legislate.
