Northern Senior League Division One Huntley 2 Cam Bulldogs 3
A LATE goal from substitute Paul Street gave Cam a hard fought but well deserved win at Huntley, a result that took his side up to second place in the league, writes Keith Watson.
Street arrived at the far post to tap in a strike that not only marked his debut for the Bulldogs but also his emergence from more than a season of injury problems.
In a game littered with chances the home side had the first effort of note on 15 minutes when a shot from just inside the box skidded off the slick surface and forced Ben Jagger to make a fine parry.
Cam replied in kind as Loz Dorman's 25 yard drive was pushed away by the Huntley goalkeeper and soon afterwards Dorman tried again with his weaker right foot but the shot veered wide.
The Bulldogs were getting on top and created another good chance when Joe Iatalese delivered from the right for Jer Colburn but the powerful front man smashed his shot way over the bar.
Huntley took advantage of the visitors' generosity and asserted their authority on the game.
A ball through the heart of the Cam defence resulted in Simon Penny being pulled up for a foul when he had seemingly played the ball and the 20-yard free kick was struck against the foot of the post.
However, the Bulldogs were not so lucky five minutes later when the ball was played down the right for Jon Layzell and, with Brad Price giving him too much room,he cut inside and drove the opening goal past Jagger.
The visitors were in arrears for just a few minutes though.
Pete Holder made a quick break from the back and played an exquisite ball out to the left where Dorman took it in his stride and found the net from the corner of the penalty area with a delightful chip to send the sides in level at the break.
The second half was only five minutes old when Huntley earned a corner and went back into the lead with a bullet header from Rich Buhagiar.
Thereafter, Cam were much the better side as they created a hatful of chances. Sean Clune broke from midfield but struck his shot too close to the goalkeeper, while Colburn just failed to connect with an Ian Cheshire cross.
Cheshire was having an outstanding match in midfield and he helped set up Clune again but the goalkeeper made a wonderful reaction stop.
Dorman then shot wide after latching on to a poor goal kick as the Huntley goal continued to lead a charmed life.
With 20 minutes left the visitors replaced Steve Bennett with Street and then drew level five minutes later.
Iatalese measured an inch perfect pass down the channel for Colburn who coolly squared the ball away from the advancing goalkeeper for Dorman to roll in a simple goal from 12 yards.
The home side had struggled to deal with Dorman all afternoon and shortly afterwards a late challenge caused the Cam forward to crumple like an industrial chimney-stack, although he was able to continue.
Just two minutes from time the Bulldogs got the winner that their play richly deserved.
Dorman spun his marker on the left wing, rode a challenge out wide and drilled a cross along the six yard box that Street could not fail to convert.
Afterwards Cam boss Stuart Grimwood said: "That was a great win and thoroughly deserved on the number of chances we created.
"What was even better though was the way we reacted when we went behind."
