Put an end to this store farce

SIR - I write to support what Mr Newth said in the October 29 issue - that a supermarket will ruin Dursley.

We have good shops now and helpful people who serve in them. I have friends from as far afield as Frampton-on-Severn and Minchinhampton who choose to come here to do their shopping. What's more when local people run businesses the money circulates locally and tradesman support local activities.

As president of Dursley Town AFC I have reason to be very grateful for the generous help we receive from local firms. Supermarkets cream off the profits for fat cats and shareholders who may be in Timbuktu or Israel!

I think the proposed supermarket was first mooted in 1986 so you might say it is almost the longest-running farce! I hope we put an end to it now before we are faced with another monstrosity, in addition to the hideous new library.
