Community club to get #8,000 boost

THE THRIVING GL11 community project in Cam will receive £8,000 from Dursley Lions' Club.

The money will be used by the GL11 Project, based at Glebe House, Fairmead, to buy laptop computers for use by the community, particularly the elderly and disabled.

A disabled person in the Cam-Dursley area has also been granted £1,500 by the Lions towards the cost of buying a specially adapted vehicle while another applicant received £1,500 towards the cost of installing a stair lift.

The Lions have also agreed to contribute £1,000 to the Dhaka Ahsania Mission appeal in Bangladesh. The money will be used for medical treatments and to buy medical equipment.

Printer John Carter and his wife, Christine, are regular visitors to Gambia where they have adopted and support the Talingding School. Over the years the school has developed from mud huts to two purpose-built classrooms.

Now Dursley Lions are to pay for two teachers and the head teacher's salary for 12 months. There will also be an additional £1,000 from the Lions for the school's running costs.

Lion Bill Sweet celebrated his 60th birthday with a party at which he invited guests instead of giving presents, to contribute to the County Air Ambulance.

The event raised £1,180 including a contribution from the Lions. The Lions have also made a donation to the Gloucestershire Chest Fund and £5,000 to SHARE, a counselling service for young people in the Cam-Dursley area.

A donation of £500 was made to the Stroud Valleys Project scheme to regenerate the riverside area behind the Co-op supermarket in Cam. Membership of Dursley Lions Club has recently increased by two to 37 with one prospective member awaiting badging-up.
