Need to take a stand

SIR - I have heard that the Bymacks building in Long Street, Dursley, is to be demolished for health and safety reasons.

I think that is bull. We have all seen restoration programs on the television and they have rebuilt much worse ruins than that. I think if Crest are allowed to knock it down they will be laughing all the way to the bulldozer. I'm not saying they lit the match but with all the wasted time and the warnings they had then they may as well have.

The frontage is listed, surely that should mean something. We have precious little descent architecture in Dursley and to lose this would be the real crime. I know that what replaces it would be pale in comparison but would save Crest a fortune.

Don't let them get away with it, please let it stand. The council has the power so why don't they use it? They walked over all of us ratepayers and the town council when the library was being planned so why not take on the big company, or are they scared they won't roll over and submit to anything like the small people do?

There must be someone in power who can stand up to these people. A R Greenhill Silver Street Dursley
