Sir - Remembrances of the Severn in the 1940s (at Purton)
Sunday's seem to suit me I spend the quiet hours in reverie Of the past, the seemingly always sun-filled days of yesteryear When I watched the sempiternal Severn's ebb and flow And listened to the memories of 'old days' I was pleased to know When Severn salmon were prolific, plentiful and cheap King of river fish They couldn't alter, to withstand the increased pollution of the water All these pubs in Purton, were full of happy women and men Cider, home-made six pence a pint Saturday night dancing in the old schoolroom was great Now it seems still and boring Though the sunsets stay so beautiful Sadly nothing stays the same Cause I've grown old (and as if it matters) I've also changed my name.
