YOUR article "Residents are Berkeley's Future" (Gazette, March 4) gives entirely the wrong impression of how the people not only of Berkeley, but also of the surrounding district, feel about the proposal that Berkeley should become a "principal settlement", together with the dumping of a further 300 houses on the town.
In fact, vociferous protests were made by the majority of the 250 people attending the exhibition. It is significant that the Green Issues very brief questionnaire does not pose the question: "Are you in favour of this development?"
Feelings are running so high that a petition is being organised against these proposals. As one of the canvassers I stood, for nine of the ten hours duration of the exhibition, at the entrance to the Town Hall. During that time 25 people refused to sign, 85 did sign and the remainder said they had already signed. I hope the developers will take this message on board and leave Berkeley alone!
