Grant aid for local groups

ONCE again Stroud District Council is inviting community and voluntary groups to apply for funding in 2006-2007.

The council has set up a number of different schemes to offer grant and aid to local charities, voluntary groups, individuals and other organisations.

One such scheme is the Rural and Community Investment Scheme, through which the council has awarded in 2005 a total of £500,000 to 100 projects and activities run by local organisations.

This scheme welcomes applications from those running social groups or arts organisations benefiting the local community who may be in need of equipment, or funding for a specific project. According to the council's website, the scheme aims to support "projects that enable people to take part in art, sport, heritage and community activities, as well as projects that promote learning, the environment and health in the community."

Grants are awarded of between £500 and £10,000.

Those running or managing community buildings used by local organisations may also be eligible for grants under the Village Hall and Community Buildings Scheme. Grants are made to support major renovation works, and even the construction of new buildings. This scheme has an annual amount o £10,000 to help fund priority physical improvements where total costs are in the region of £20,000 or more.

Stroud District Council will be hosting three grant information evenings, where help and advice will be given for funding applications. These will be held in the council chamber at Ebley Mill from 7pm on Wednesday, April 20, Tuesday, April 26 and Wednesday, May 11.

Rural and Community Investment Scheme inquiries should be addressed to Chris Coleman (01453 754303 or chris.coleman@stroud.gov.uk); Village Hall and Community Buildings Scheme inquiries should go to Krista Harris (01453 754 325 or krista.harris@stroud.gov.uk), both of whom may also be contacted to reserve places at information evenings.

Application forms for both schemes are available from today on council website. The closing date for receipt of applications is Thursday, June 30.
