New block hits right note

DURSLEY'S Rednock School is justly proud of its new purpose-built music centre, opened on Monday.

For years, the school has had to endure a prison-like block to house its music curriculum, situated far from the main buildings with a field in between.

The new building is named after John Pritchard, who was head teacher for 17 years.

He was responsible for securing funding for the project, and, at the opening ceremony, expressed delight and honour at the tribute.

Chairman of governors David Martin spoke of Mr Pritchard's championing of performing arts at Rednock and his belief in links with the local community.

The new centre includes two ensemble rooms, a recital room and a recording studio, all of which are intended to attract involvement from the wider community to complement the school's activities.

This already happens with Rednock's Science block, which is open to local primary schools, colleges and universities.

The John Pritchard Centre for Music was designed by architect Steve Lacey, of the Falconer Partnership, Stroud, to harmonise with the school's other new buildings, including the Millennium Drama block.

Governor John Cox, responsible for the Rednock site and buildings, drew attention to the 16-layer thickness of the special doors in the music block, contributing to excellent acoustic quality.

Head of music Jason Andrews now expects an increase in 'take-up' for Music GCSE, in addition to more pupils learning musical instruments. Two new peripatetic teachers for bass and classical guitar have already been appointed.

He said: "This whole project has been a real team effort, between the contractors EW Beard and the governors, with the music staff consulted all along the way."

The opening ceremony on Monday concluded with a very impressive performance by the Rednock School Swing Band, whose concert at Coaley Village Hall tomorrow is a sell-out.

Current headteacher David Alexander said: "This has been a great occasion, celebrating the new music block and our guest of honour John Pritchard."
