A FORMER city council worker with a keen interest in local radio has started work as the new PCSO in two towns near Dursley.
PCSO Mike Trebble took up the position on March 29. Based from Dursley he will assist PCSO Tracey Wren in Wotton-under-Edge as well as covering Berkeley.
Mr Trebble said: "In Wotton I will assist Tracey, who has been doing a brilliant job. Monday was my first day in Berkeley and I have been going around meeting people and making contacts. During the week I will be going to meet the shopkeepers and making myself known."
Mr Trebble, who lives in Thornbury with his wife Cherry and his two sons, previously worked for Bristol City Council in parking services. Before that he ran a record shop and also worked for a radio station in the city. "One thing I am keen to promote is people getting in touch with me via email when they have a problem," he said.
"I am also interested in taking the Stranger Danger visits to primary schools and attending school fetes with the police car so children can sit in the car and people can learn about what I do."
One of the issues he has already tackled is the problem of parking in Wotton.
"A lot of shop keepers were complaining that people were parking in limited parking bays all day. But since I have arrived I have addressed the problem and the situation is a lot better.
"A lot of the time plates were missing and I have been on to Stroud District Council and something is being done about that."
Berkeley and Wotton have both experienced problems with groups of young people gathering at night and Mr Trebble is keen to talk to them about what can be done to resolve the situation.
"Part of my role is to get to know the youths and to see what they want. I want to go to them with positive thoughts to find out what I can do for them as well as keeping residents who have concerns happy."
Despite only being in the job for eight weeks, residents are already recognising their new PCSO.
"I am very pleased with the role and I enjoy it very much. I am keen to develop the role as far as I can and where time will allow I would like to get out to the rural villages. I am an approachable person and I will give my mobile number to anybody I think needs it."
Away from the job, Mr Trebble enjoys music and travel. He will also be presenting shows on Thornbury's community radio station when it goes on air in November.
