First martial arts festival

THE first South West Martial Arts Festival for people with disabilities is hoping to attract people from all over the Cotswolds and beyond.

The event at Cotswold Leisure Centre, in Cirencester, on Wednesday, June 15 (10am-2pm) is sponsored by Cotswold District Council, Cirencester Town Council, D&J Sports and Cirencester College.

It features taster sessions run by qualified Black Belt instructors for people of all abilities, plus a Kata competition.

Cotswold District Council's leisure marketing manager Alan Reid said: "We decided to host this event as we were so impressed last year by the success of the South East Festival, attended by students of Cirencester College.

"There's something for everyone with an interest in martial arts, from judo and Tai Chi to karate and kick boxing."

Alan added: "There is a real need for sporting events to be opened up for people of all abilities and we'd like to hear from more groups who would benefit from joining us for the day.

"You do not need to have trained in the martial arts before - this is not only an event for the experienced, but also a taster session for those who would like to have a go."

He continued: "Training in martial arts helps people with disabilities to improve their co-ordination and flexibility, and to work as part of a team. "We hope those taking part will come away with a sense of self worth and increased confidence."

The event is for both adults and children.
