Beauty contest

I WAS disappointed to read that yet again the Gazette is running the Dursley Rosebud competition.

I believe that the competition should be open to boys and girls. Nominations could be asked for children who have done good work in the community.

It's very sad to see a newspaper like the Gazette encouraging girls to think that in order to succeed in life they have to be pretty.

* Editor's note: The Rosebud competition was revived last year after its great popularity in the 1950s and 60s. The Gazette runs the contest on behalf of Dursley Town Festival Committee, which will doubtless be willing to discuss a change of emphasis for the 2006 carnival.
