Post office must remain

TESCO will be asked to give assurances that they will not jettison two important community resources as a result of their takeover.

Cam Parish Council will insist that the post office, which is currently inside the Co-op, should remain.

Chairman Cllr Dennis Andrewartha said: "It is essential that we lobby Tesco for the retention of that facility."

Customers have been told this week that the post office will remain but users will look for more concrete assurances, especially after Tesco closed the post office when they took over a store in Wotton-under-Edge.

The parish council will also need to find out what the future holds for its Chapel Street development.

The project got the go-ahead from the SDC development control committee in the spring but has not yet progressed further because the Co-op have a restricted covenant on the car park off Noel Lee Way.

The covenant, which can be lifted by agreement, says the car park can only be used as a car park and not for development.

Tesco should now take over the covenant and the parish council will have to start negotiations with them instead.
