Avon Netball League Division 6 Relegation Play-Off Phoenix II 24 Parkes Tornadoes 18
A SUPERB final quarter of netball meant that Phoenix II avoided the ignominy of relegation.
After finishing level on points, the final relegation place from Division 6 had to be decided by a play-off game. By a twist of fate, the game was against local rivals Parkes Tornadoes - one of the friendliest teams in the division.
The game was tense and initially full of unforced errors, as it was evident that neither side had played much netball in the two months since the end of the regular season.
The first quarter finished with Tornadoes one goal ahead but Phoenix had enjoyed the majority of possession with the midcourt players making some inspired turnovers.
Phoenix pulled level by the end of the second quarter with some good passing combinations and controlling play.
After the break they resumed with a far greater confidence and gained a one-goal advantage going into the final quarter.
At the start of that quarter, with an enforced substitution, Phoenix got three quick goals, which seemed to break the Tornadoes' spirit.
Phoenix managed to hold on to their lead as the defence battled hard to resist any fightback.
Phoenix's Deborah Brock-Doyle said: "Congratulations to all players especially Sian Trayling and Zoe Sycamore for determined shooting.
"Although only eight players were used in this game, this victory would not have been possible without the support of the second team squad."
l Training for the new season will start at Katharine Lady Berkeley's School on Tuesday, August 30.
The club is always looking for new members for its two teams - all ages and abilities welcome. Contact Nicola on 01453 549167 for more details.
