Ode To Kingscote

The north of the Cotswolds may have the majority of the chocolate-box villages that draw in the summer tourists in their droves but the south of the county around Dursley and Wotton is also rich in attractive villages and hamlets where, being less well known, we can stroll at our leisure.

A poem by architect John Wilkes, of Cam, about the pretty village of Kingscote.

ODE TO KINGSCOTE

Broad sweeping uplands - and clear blue Cotswold skies Here lies Kingscote village - a gem, a joy, a prize

There are Neolithic barrows at nearby Kingscote Wood And at a place they call The Chessalls, Roman villas stood

The Head of Minerva was unearthed here years ago As well as fine mosaic floors, with hypocausts below

Ciren's Corinium Museum holds these treasures now First revealed - quite by chance - by a farmer with his plough

So stop right here in Kingscote; drink at The Hunters Hall It's an inn of distinction - where huntsmen can stand tall

St John the Baptist's is the church, you'll find it down the lane A peaceful spot of unspoilt charm - even in the rain!

Pass through the ancient lych gate and admire the fine interior There's glass in there by Kempe - it really is superior

Teulon did the furnishings, at woodwork he was very able From old Newington Bagpath church, he brought his altar table

There is stained glass aplenty by Powell & Sons; and Wailes Also note the reredos; gallery; tiles; and altar rails

Doctor Jenner married here in Seventeen Eighty Eight His really great discovery was - how to vaccinate

His bride was Catharine Kingscote; they lived a happy life His work saved many thousand lives, cutting down on strife

Sheep graze the fields contentedly - all round this place Wool made many local fortunes - I am sure that is the case

Until sixty years ago, a manor stood - in old Kingscote Park Now silence reigns - save the call of swallow, swift and lark

So come to Kingscote on the Wolds; enjoy its atmosphere Admire the walls of mellow stone; sit down and have that beer !
