Mini idea in need of support

AN appeal is being made for community groups in Berkeley to get out and about, but using a mini bus.

A community minibus scheme is being launched in the town and organisers are keen to start taking bookings.

The minibus project is part of a larger Gloucestershire Minibus Scheme run by the Gloucestershire Rural Transport Partnership.

Berkeley Town Councillor Ted Holmes, chairman of the community minibus scheme, said: "It's about making connections, providing shopping trips for the elderly, visits to local tourists sites and trips to Cribs Causeway.

"We hope community organisations will make good use of it."

Instead of hiring buses from commercial firms, it is hoped that groups within Berkeley such as, Scouts, Guides, youth groups, the WI and Berkeley Medical Centre, will use a bus from the scheme.

Cllr Holmes said: "I think it is a good project and if it is supported and made use of then together we will develop it into a worthwhile project."

At the moment the project only has two drivers and more are needed if it is to be a success. Training will be provided for the position, which because of the voluntary nature of the scheme is unpaid, although reasonable expenses will be covered.

Cllr Holmes said: "The more drivers, the more the bus will be available, hopefully improving the transport situation in Berkeley."
