Debating future of centres

RESIDENTS across Gloucestershire are to be consulted on the future development of Sure Start children's centres.

By 2010 there will be around 40 children's centres across the county and Gloucestershire County Council wants to know where they should be and how the services should be offered.

Children's centres will provide a range of services for children aged birth to five years and their families including full daycare and early education and child and family health services.

Special consultation events will be taking place throughout September to ensure that children's centres are sited in the most appropriate places.

Cllr Alan Pearce, cabinet member for young people, said: "Up until now, much of Government policy has focused on developing children's centres and other children's services in areas of disadvantage. There is now a shift towards developing services that reach all young children and their families. We need child care professionals and parents to tell us how best to develop these services."

The Government wants to have children's centre services in every community by 2010. In line with this, Gloucestershire must open an additional 23 children's centres by 2008. To serve every community by 2010, the county will need approximately 40 children's centres.

A consultation event will be held at The Bear of Rodborough, Rodborough Common, Stroud, on Friday, September 23 (9am-1.15pm). To book a place call Carrie-Ann Edwards on 01452 425436 or email carrie-ann.edwards@gloucestershire.gov.uk.
