Incredible Charfield fightback stuns Freeway

Gloucestershire Northern Senior League Division Two Stonehouse Freeway 3 Charfield 4

CHARFIELD staged one of the comebacks of any season to come from three goals down to beat Stonehouse Freeway 4-3.

Trailing 3-0 after an hour, Charfield, under the stewardship of new manager James Thompson, looked well beaten.

But after Thompson introduced Tyson Murray, Sam Deacon and Jim Rigg the course of the match changed completely.

Kris Lee started the comeback after good work from Rigg, striking a right foot shot in from twenty yards with 25 minutes remaining.

Alex May then stunned Freeway with three goals in the final quarter of an hour, the winner being a glorious injury time shot over a stranded goalkeeper from more than 30 yards.

The amazing finish to the game had looked unlikely as the home side had eased into a three-goal lead.

Visiting goalkeeper Craig Luker had done superbly to keep the Stonehouse forwards at bay but he was eventually beaten on the half hour by one of his own defenders - Jim Williams.

The hosts added two more goals early in the second half but were left gobsmacked by the incredible Charfield fightback.

The celebrations that followed were more akin to winning the league than winning three points.

Charfield can take real heart from this performance and now look forward to another away fixture against Newton Heath in Cheltenham tomorrow.
