Chance to picnic for a good cause

THE FIFTH annual Picnic in the Park will be held this year at Newark Park, Ozleworth, near Wotton-under-Edge, on Saturday, September 10.

Raising money for Save the Children, the event is being held on a slightly later date than usual, but hopes are high for an 'Indian Summer'.

The picnic is held traditionally at National Trust property Newark Park, by arrangement with the resident tenant Michael Claydon.

Originally a Tudor hunting lodge, Newark Park is surrounded by extensive grounds, with beautiful views of Ozleworth Valley.

The picnic event is held on the lawns in front of the house, and people are invited to bring picnics and seating.

Live music is provided by local favourites The Trespassers, a band which has fused with another Gloucestershire band - it now includes an extra keyboard player and vocalist, and the exciting addition of a saxophone player.

They play lively dance music and other familiar songs from the 1960s to the present day.

One of the organisers Yvonne Johnson said: "During the last year, The Trespassers have played further afield, in Manchester and other venues in the north of England, acquiring a strong following there.

"However, Newark Park remains a great favourite of theirs, and they are looking forward to a really great evening, for the fourth year running." As dusk falls at the Picnic in the Park events, the grounds are lit by candles, and the setting takes on a magical appearance.

Gates are open at 6pm; and Newark Park is open for viewing from 6.30pm to 7.30pm, a great opportunity to see the fascinating story of a lived-in 'stately home'.

The music can be enjoyed between 8pmand 11.30pm. Yvonne Johnson added: "We hope local people will give plenty of support for this lovely event, so we can raise funds for children in need around the world."

Tickets are available from Robinsons Florist, Long Street, Wotton-under-Edge or from Yvonne on 01453 842718.

(Children under 16 years old, barbecues and flambeaux are not permitted, for safety reasons.)
