Campaign hits the road

BUSES throughout Gloucestershire are to carry advertising for a crackdown by police on domestic violence.

Gloucestershire Constabulary launched its campaign on Monday to coincide with publication of the force's new policy on tackling the issue.

Not only will buses carry advertisements raising awareness of the crime but also 8,000 posters will be distributed in clubs, pubs and other venues to encourage victims to seek help.

Det Insp Ruth Mather, who manages the force's response to domestic violence, said the crime could take many forms and that raising awareness was just one aspect of reducing the rate of offences.

She said: "This policy aims to give a clear statement of commitment, which every officer of the Gloucestershire Constabulary must have, to take firm action against those who commit domestic violence and to provide caring support for those who suffer it.

"It is hoped that people experiencing domestic violence will be encouraged to call the police and also obtain support and advice from local groups."

During 2004/05 the force helped 3,166 victims of domestic violence and dealt with 6,187 incidents.

Det Insp Mather added: "Domestic violence does not only mean physical assault. It can be controlling behaviour, which includes sexual, psychological, emotional and financial abuse.

"It is rarely a one-off event. Physical and sexual abuse tends to increase in frequency and severity with time, sometimes ending in death.

"Anyone can experience domestic violence, regardless of age, race, sexuality, religion, disability or ethnic group.

"Remember, if you are in an abusive relationship, you are not to blame. You can get help."

Gloucestershire Constabulary has three domestic violence units - in Cheltenham, Gloucester and Stroud - which can be contacted for support via the force's non-emergency number on 0845 0901234.
