Driver killed in road accident

A MAN died after a horrific road traffic accident on the A38 at Slimbridge. The 43-year-old driver of a Ford Fiesta was pronounced dead at the scene after his car, travelling towards Gloucester, collided with a silver DAF box van travelling towards Bristol.

The man who died is known to have come from Yate but he has not yet been named by police.

The male driver of the DAF box van, also from Yate, was taken to Gloucester Royal hospital by ambulance with minor injuries to his leg.

The crash happened at approximately 1.50pm on Wednesday afternoon between the Prince of Wales pub and the Slimbridge cross roads. The road had to be closed for almost 10 hours as a result.

Police finished investigating the crash scene and reopened the road at 12.05am on Thursday.

Police spokesman Matt Ford said early reports suggested the Ford Fiesta may have strayed into the path of the DAF box van causing the crash.

"However we are appealing for any witnesses to come forward to help with the investigation and clarify what actually happened," he said.

Anyone with any information should contact the police on 0845 090 1234 and quote incident number 299 for October 26.
